How much do you reveal or give to fans in your books?

My friends and I have had a lot of conversations about how much do you give readers, what they want and how much you deny them what they want.

The truth is you kind of just give people what they want because it then becomes very straight forward. I think what you have to do, which is much harder and I’m not even quite sure how you do this, but you have to give people what they don’t know they want.

People have to be surprised, unless they are surprised when they read. They may be happy, but they will never truly be satisfied.

I’m a reader myself and the thing I love most, is to be surprised and to be surprised in a way where I got something I didn’t even know I wanted, but now having gotten it, I can see how much I wanted it.

So, I think that is the best thing you can do and I think when people say what they want as readers is the fulfillment of what’s come before. If someone has been overruled before they want them defeated. They have that to go on, but if you can turn that around in ways that they didn’t expect, I think that they’ll be really happy.
