The Last Book in the Universe
by Rodman Philbrick
In a violent post-apolcalyptic world, brain-drain entertainment equipment is being used to destroy human memory. Spaz – an epileptic and thus unable to “plug in” – learns from an old man called Ryter that books once existed.

Excerpt:
Nobody around here reads anymore. Why bother, when you can just use a mindprobe needle and shoot all the images and excitement straight into your brain? I've heard of books, but they were long before I was born, in the backtimes before the Big Shake, when everything was supposedly perfect, and everybody lived rich. Before the city was divided into latches.

I thought that this book was really good. I cried in two parts. When bean gets sick and when Ryter gets dragged around with the jet bike. I would have to say that if anyone likes fiction books that they will love this book.

I think this is a really good book and that it makes you look back and feel good that we have green grass and blue skies and that we can have freedom unlike how it was in the future the book.

I read this book in my English 4 class (Seniors 2004!). My teacher Mrs.Head introduced us to the book. And I'm glad she did! This is one of my favorite books now! It kept me and the class at the edge of our seats wanting to read just one more chapter before class was let out.

I really enjoyed seeing what the future would be like if everyone stopped reading and plugged into computer games too much.
Jane K., Age 13

We thought this book was good. The best parts were the mind probes and takvees. The guy who led our book group was a maniac, but we'd still recommend this book to anyone.
