Charting a New Course is a survival program designed to help problem kids change the way they live their lives. Six kids spend a month on a small ship, the Phoenix, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, thousands of miles from land. They spend their days doing hard physical work, and live in cramped quarters. As for the food, they're happy not to ask for seconds. Captain Cascadden is kind; but the first mate Mr. Radford gets real pleasure from being mean.

A powerful tropical storm makes things even worse for the crew of the Phoenix. Shipwrecked, the kids must discover how to survive on their own.
