Irmo Elementary School has a history of using the latest technology. In 1935, it was one of the first schools in its area to use a chalkboard. Today, Irmo uses interactive whiteboards. But the school's innovation with technology doesn't stop there. Students can access two Pentium labs, as well as in-classroom network- and Internet-connected computers.

Irmo Elementary leaders are using technology to encourage its young students' creativity. The children publish their own books, broadcast daily news shows, and create multimedia presentations for the school community. Administrators and staff use technology to maintain electronic grade books and prepare students' individual education plans, among other duties. An inquiry project developed in connection with the

University of South Carolina lets teachers and students use web sites to create and share stories and strategies on interactive whiteboards. Electronic snapshots from the whiteboard are then recorded as jpeg files that other classes and students can reference.

Almost everything at the school is electronic or somehow connected to technology, from assessment data and report cards to the daily parent volunteer log-in sheet. However, Irmo Elementary's emphasis on creativity and technology hasn't distracted it from its academic core. The school has won awards for the past three years for outstanding student achievement in all AYP subcategories, proving that technology initiatives can raise the bar on student achievement.
