CoderDojo Tip: File Extensions
 

Sometimes your computer may not show the extensions of files. Here’s how to show them on various operating systems.


Windows 7 or Vista:

  • Click the Start menu
  • Click “Control Panel”
  • Click “Appearance and Personalization”
  • Click “Folder Options”
  • Click the View Tab
  • Under “Advanced Settings,” click the box marked “Hide extensions for known file types” to uncheck it
  • Click OK.

Windows 8/8.1:

  • Hold down the Windows key and press X. A menu will appear.
  • Select “Control Panel”
  • Double-click “Folder Options” in the window that appears
  • Click the View Tab
  • Under “Advanced Settings,” click the box marked ‘Hide extensions for known file types’ to uncheck it
  • Click OK.

Windows 10:

  • Click the Start menu
  • Click “File Explorer”
  • Click the View tab and then the Options button.
  • The Folder Options window appears. Click the “View” tab in this window.
  • Under “Advanced Settings,” click the box marked “Hide extensions for known file types” to uncheck it
  • Click OK.

Apple OSX:

  • Open the Finder
  • In the menu bar, click Finder to open the menu, and select “Preferences”
  • In the dialog box that appears, click the box marked “Show all file name extensions”
  • Close the Preferences dialog.
