CoderDojo Tip: File Extensions
Sometimes your computer may not show the extensions of files. Here’s how to show them on various operating systems.
Windows 7 or Vista:
- Click the Start menu
- Click “Control Panel”
- Click “Appearance and Personalization”
- Click “Folder Options”
- Click the View Tab
- Under “Advanced Settings,” click the box marked “Hide extensions for known file types” to uncheck it
- Click OK.
Windows 8/8.1:
- Hold down the Windows key and press X. A menu will appear.
- Select “Control Panel”
- Double-click “Folder Options” in the window that appears
- Click the View Tab
- Under “Advanced Settings,” click the box marked ‘Hide extensions for known file types’ to uncheck it
- Click OK.
Windows 10:
- Click the Start menu
- Click “File Explorer”
- Click the View tab and then the Options button.
- The Folder Options window appears. Click the “View” tab in this window.
- Under “Advanced Settings,” click the box marked “Hide extensions for known file types” to uncheck it
- Click OK.
Apple OSX:
- Open the Finder
- In the menu bar, click Finder to open the menu, and select “Preferences”
- In the dialog box that appears, click the box marked “Show all file name extensions”
- Close the Preferences dialog.
