Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report

A biennial national survey of parents’ and children’s reading attitudes and behaviors.

Welcome to the Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report™

For more than 100 years, Scholastic’s mission has been to connect kids with stories they love. Books have the power to make kids laugh, to teach new concepts, to take readers to faraway lands, to help children understand themselves and their neighbors, to support kids as they try to make sense of the world around them, and so much more. Books and reading also provide countless social-emotional benefits, impact mental health and wellbeing, and serve as critical resources for families as they navigate the winding journey of a child’s development from birth through graduation and beyond.

Since its first edition, the Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report™ has been tracking reading frequency, importance, and enjoyment among kids and families, and the most recent findings continue this trend while expanding on the reading lives of children and parents. The latest research also covers the ever important topic of expanding access to books, providing insight into how increased book access can bridge inequities. And in a first for the Kids & Family Reading Report, we have developed a data-filled Family Guide, a free, comprehensive, research-backed resource that not only addresses a variety of developmental milestones and common conversations during each age range, but that also gives families the practical tools to put these findings into practice at home.

Take a look at the report’s full key findings here—including data on reading aloud, summer reading, reading’s impact on mental health, the importance of libraries, and the role teachers play in building lifelong readers—and dive deeper into the data by exploring the comprehensive sections in the menu bar above. Our hope is that with this research, you and the kids in your life will feel empowered to discover new books and connect to the stories that will inspire them to keep reading for years to come.
