On February 28, Camden City School District (New Jersey) launched Scholastic R.E.A.L. (Read, Excel, Achieve, Lead), a literacy-based mentoring program, at Forest Hill Family School in New Jersey.
The event connected students with role models and community leaders, including State District Superintendent Katrina T. McComb and Scholastic representatives, to inspire a love of reading. Mentors came into classrooms to conduct read-alouds and lead book discussions with students. Organizations, including the Camden City Fire Department, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, participated as mentors.
Dwaine Millard, SVP, National Sales and Partnerships, Scholastic said: "We are thrilled to connect Camden students with inspiring leaders in their community through Scholastic R.E.A.L.. This program not only cultivates a love for reading but actively engages everyone in a student’s life. We deeply appreciate the dedicated mentors who volunteer their time to help strengthen these community bonds."
Check out highlights from the event, including read-alouds and book discussions, in these engaging segments:
Scholastic R.E.A.L. provides schools, districts, public libraries and organizations with the resources to build successful mentoring programs that support a culture of literacy. In addition to introducing students to community role-models, children can build their own home libraries with take-home books and families can learn new ways to support literacy at home with companion guides. The initiative supports academic success, boosts students' confidence, and strengthens their connection to the community.
Additionally, the Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report™ shows that having adults in a child’s life who prioritize reading is key to developing frequent readers – making programs like Scholastic R.E.A.L. more important than ever.
