Last month, the Little Rock School District, in collaboration with Scholastic Education, proudly announced ‘Reading in the Rock’—a citywide literacy initiative dedicated to sparking a love for reading in every young mind—during its first State of the District address.

Designed to unite schools, families, businesses, and community organizations, ‘Reading in the Rock’ aims to ensure that every child in Little Rock has access to books, enriching literacy experiences, and the support needed to foster lifelong reading habits.

The launch of the initiative was recently highlighted in a segment on CBS (KTHV-TV): 'One dream, one team' Little Rock School District announces literacy program.

Scholastic is thrilled to help foster a love for reading, improve literacy skills, and increase family engagement right here in Little Rock,” said Harold Edwards, SVP, Strategy & Solution Development, Scholastic Education Solutions. “It is inspiring to see the energy behind this city-wide literacy movement that will ultimately spark the kind of book joy and appetite for reading that decreases opportunity gaps and makes a life-long impact on students.”

As part of its partnership with the school district, Scholastic will provide students in the LRSD with:

  • Spring Break Reading Take-Home Packs with books and activities to begin building their library.
  • Reading Tip Guides for parents to read to their children and encourage them to read.
  • Reading Logs for students to track their progress, celebrate the joy of reading and earn a chance to win prizes.

In the weeks ahead, Scholastic and the Little Rock School District will distribute 10 student-selected books home with every elementary student to help grow their home libraries. This remarkable initiative ensures students have access to engaging books that not only expand their home collections but also foster a lifelong love for reading.
