This summer, you can send your students in preschool and kindergarten off on new adventures with the best summer reading books for 2023. From stand-alone titles to incredible series for early readers, these books are perfect to keep your students' reading momentum — and their imaginations — active during the summer break.

Little readers learning their alphabet will love There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed the ABCs, a rhyming, hilarious title that brings the classic song to the page. Using rhyme and entertaining illustrations, your students will follow along as the Old Lady swallows everything from apples to cars and get a whole lot of belly laughs.

You Are Enough is a sweet and impactful picture book by Sofia Sanchez, an 11-year-old model and actress with Down syndrome, with a powerful message of love and acceptance, no matter what a child looks like, where they're from, or what their abilities are. Your students will see themselves and their classmates and friends within the pages and learn how everyone is unique and special in their own way!

Meanwhile, I Color Myself Different is Colin Kaepernick's loving ode to Black and brown children through his own story of self-discovery growing up. When the teacher assigns the class an art project to draw their families, Colin picks up his brown crayon and thinks about all of the amazing people who have paved the way for him — from artists to athletes to community leaders — and how he himself has the same ability to change the world, too!

Setting up your students for summer reading will help ensure they’re ready for the next steps in their early learning journey. The newly released and best-selling titles featured here will delight the youngest of readers as they embark on a summer reading adventure that will spark an early love of reading.
