North Brunswick High School gives students who are less than excited about literature some autonomy over their education, while also holding them more accountable. Grades under 80 become zeroes until retested and, over the course of the year, students become intrinsically motivated to succeed without retests. In Literary Circles, students self-select texts and work collaboratively while meeting state standards. By choosing their texts and scheduling their own work, students are able to make connections and direct discussions while an instructor guides mini-lessons and observations.
