“Mom, did you know Nanny and Pop only had a black-and-white TV when Daddy was little? And there was no remote control!”
My nine-year-old daughter loves hearing family stories and I can see these stories are helping her piece together an understanding of where each person sits in our family tree, how she is related to each family member (which is important when you are nine!), and how times have changed over the generations.
She loves spending time chatting with her grandparents (and great-grandparents) and there is really something special about the relationship they share. By hearing family anecdotes from my parents and in-laws, my daughter is developing her sense of self through a better understanding of her own family history and heritage.
With Grandparents Day approaching on Sunday, September 9th, I can't think of a better time for your child to make a date with her grandparents (or great-grandparents) to practice listening, writing, and learning about them. This Interview Q&A printable questionnaire is a great tool for developing these skills, and it just might become a family history keepsake your child can pass down to future generations.
